Independence Day is a public holiday in Peru, observed on July 28 and July 29 each year.
Independence Day commemorates the day when Peru gained its independence. On July 28, 1821, General San Martín proclaimed Peru's independence. In Peru, the two days together are called Fiestas Patrias, one of the most important celebrations of the year.
San Martín was an Argentine general. He was born on February 25, 1778, and died on August 17, 1850. He was the principal leader of the successful battles that won independence from Spanish rule for several countries in South America, including Argentina, Chile, and Peru.
