Independence Day from Spain is a public holiday in Panama, observed on December 28 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when Panama overthrew Spanish rule in 1921.
In 1510, the Spanish founded the first permanent settlement called Santa María la Antigua del Darién in the area, and in 1513, the leader of the settlers claimed the whole area under the Spanish crown. They moved to the Pacific side to govern the area In 1919 and built a new settlement, now known as Panama City. It became part of the Viceroyalty of Peru and all other South American Spanish possessions.
In the 1800s, the Spanish-American wars of independence were heating up across Latin America after over 300 years of Spanish rule. On November 10, 1821, the city of Los Santos declared its separation from the Spanish Empire, accelerating Panama's independence. On November 28, 1821, Panama successfully overthrew Spanish rule without military conflicts.
