Independence Day is a public holiday in Mongolia on December 29 yearly. The holiday commemorates when Mongolia declared independence from Qing China in 1911.
In the late 12th century, Genghis Khan united the Mongol tribes and established the Mongolian Empire, which divided into four kingdoms or Khanates after his death. One of the khanates consisting of the Mongol homeland and China became the Yuan dynasty and took power for more than one century until it was replaced by the Ming dynasty in 1368.
The Mongols fled to the north, established the Northern Yuan dynasty, and continued to rule their homeland. In the middle of the 16th century, Buddhism was introduced to Mongolia, and the entire Mongolian population embraced Buddhism. In 1691, Mongolia came under the Qing dynasty's rule, which was overthrown by the Xinhai Revolution in 1911.
Mongolia, under the spiritual leader of Bogd Khaan, declared independence with the fall of the Qing dynasty on December 29, 1911. However, the newly built Chinese government considered Mongolia as its territory. In 1919, Chinese troops occupied Mongolia. With Soviet help, Mongolia declared its independence again on July 11, 1921.
