Independence Day is a public holiday in Libya, and it is observed on December 24 each year. The holiday commemorates when Libya gained its independence on December 24, 1951.
Libya is a country in the Maghreb region in North Africa, and people inhabited the region for thousands of years under different rules. In 1551, the Ottoman Empire took Libya and ruled the territory for over 300 years. Italia occupied Libya and established colonies after the Italo-Turkish War in 1911, combined into the Italian Libya colony in 1934.
Following the defeat of Italy in World War II, the British military controlled the former Italian Libyan provinces of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, and the French controlled the province of Fezzan. On December 24, 1951, Libya declared its independence as the United Kingdom of Libya.
