Independence Day is a public holiday in Finland, and it is observed on December 6 each year. The holiday celebrates the declaration of independence from Russia in 1917. The Russian Empire ruled Finland from 1809 due to the Finnish War from 1808 to 1809.
The February Revolution and the October Revolution in 1917 and the defeats in the First World War weakened the power of the Russian Empire on Finland, which allowed Finland to withdraw from Russian rule. On December 4, 1917, the Finnish parliament made the Declaration of Independence.
On December 18, 1917, the Soviet Russian government recognized Finland's independence, and on December 22, the highest Soviet executive body officially approved it.
