Independence Day (Ecuador)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Ecuador, and it is observed on August 10 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the city of Quito called for independence from Spain in 1809.

The Spanish took over what is now Ecuador from the Inca in 1533. After almost 300 years of Spanish rule, the people in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, called for independence from Spain on August 10, 1809. Although the independence only lasted a short time, it inspired the independence movement for the rest of Spanish America.

On October 9, 1820, Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador, became the first territory in Ecuador to gain its independence from Spain, and the rest of Ecuador gained its independence following the victory of the Battle of Pichincha on May 24, 1822.
