Independence Day (Chile)

Independence Day, also known as Fiestas Patrias, is a public holiday in Chile, and it is observed on September 18 each year.

Independence Day commemorates the anniversary when Chile declared independence from Spain on September 18, 1810, although total freedom was achieved 8 years later in 1818.

Chile has been under Spanish rule since the 16^th century and the declaration ended 300 years of Spanish colonization in Chile.
