Gibraltar National Day is a public holiday in Gibraltar, and it is observed on September 10 each year. The holiday commemorates the sovereignty referendum of 1967.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. During the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain, and the territory was ceded to the United Kingdom in 1713.
On September 10, 1967, Gibraltarian citizens were asked to vote on whether they wanted to remain under British sovereignty or pass under Spanish sovereignty. Almost all voters (99.6%) preferred to retain British sovereignty. Gibraltar National Day has been a holiday in Gibraltar commemorating the event since 1992.
