Genghis Khan's Birthday is a public holiday in Mongolia, and it is observed on the first day of the first month of winter on the Lunar calendar. The holiday commemorates the birthday of Genghis Khan, the founder and first Great Khan (Emperor) of the Mongol Empire.
Due to the lack of contemporary written records, little is known about Genghis Khan's early life. He was born in about 1162 in Delüün Boldog, near the border between modern Mongolia and Siberia. He lived in poverty when he was young after his father was poisoned.
Genghis Khan managed to unite or subdue many tribes under his rule. In 1206, the union became known as the Mongols, and Genghis Khan was acknowledged as Khan and took the new title "Genghis Khan". Due to his exceptional military successes, the Mongol Empire occupied a substantial portion of Central Asia and China.
Genghis Khan died in 1227, and his successors continued the empire's expansion and made the Mongol Empire the largest contiguous empire in history.
Genghis Khan's Birthday became a national holiday in Mongolia in 2012. Genghis Khan's real birth is unknown, and it is celebrated on the first day of winter under the Mongolian lunar calendar as the symbolic birthday.
