Founders' Day (Ghana)

Founders' Day is a public holiday in Ghana, and it is observed on August 4 each year.

Founders' Day commemorates the contributions of all people who led to the independence of modern Ghana, notably "The Big Six", which refers to the six leaders that were known as the Founding Fathers of Ghana.

The six leaders were the founders of the political party of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC):

  • Kwame Nkrumah
  • Ebenezer Ako-Adjei
  • Edward Akufo-Addo
  • Joseph Boakye Danquah
  • Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey
  • William Ofori Atta

Founders' Day was first celebrated on September 21, which is the birthday of Kwame Nkrumah, the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana. In 2019, the celebration day was changed to August 4 to commemorate the anniversary when the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) was founded on August 4, 1747, while September 21 was reserved for Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
