Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day, also called Establishment Day, is a public holiday observed in Hong Kong, and it falls on July 1 each year.
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day commemorates the formal transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China on July 1, 1997.
The United Kingdom acquired the control of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories from China through three separate treaties in 1842, 1860 and 1898. The control of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon had no expiry date, but the control on the New Territories was a 99-year lease.
On December 19, 1984, the People's Republic of China and the United Kingdom governments signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration and agreed the People's Republic of China Government resume the sovereignty over Hong Kong including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories on July 1, 1997.
