Day of the Restoration of Latvian Independence is a public holiday in Latvia, and it is observed on May 4 each year.
Day of the Restoration of Latvian Independence commemorates the anniversary when Latvia regained independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). On May 4, 1990, the Latvian Republic officially declared independence. However, full independence was achieved half a year after December 25, 1991.
Latvia has been under different rules over the centuries. In 1940, the Soviet Red Army moved to Latvia and incorporated Latvia into the Soviet Union, and during World War II, Nazi Germany took Latvia in 1941. In 1944, following the surrender of Nazi Germany, the Soviets took Latvia and incorporated it into the Soviet Union again until Latvia declared its independence in 1990.
