Day of the First President (Kazakhstan)

Day of the First President is a public holiday in Kazakhstan, and it is observed on December 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the first Presidential elections in Kazakhstan, which was held on December 1, 1991, and Nursultan Nazarbayev was elected as the President of Kazakhstan with 99% of the vote.

Nursultan Nazarbayev was born on July 6, 1940, and has been a leader in Kazakhstan since the 1980s. In 1989, he became the first secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan and the first President of Kazakhstan by the Supreme Soviet in 1990.

On December 1, 1991, the first Presidential election was held in Kazakhstan, and Nursultan Nazarbayev won. On December 16, Kazakhstan declared independence, being the last republic to declare its independence during the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

On March 19, 2019, Nursultan Nazarbayev announced his resignation as President of Kazakhstan, ending his powers on March 20, 2019. Nursultan Nazarbayev served as the President of Kazakhstan from 1990 to 2019, almost 30 years.
