Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania

Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania, also known as Independence Day, is a public holiday in Lithuania, and it is observed on February 16 each year.

Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania commemorates the anniversary of the Act of Independence of Lithuania, which was signed on February 16, 1918. Lithuania's statehood dates to the 13th century when the Kingdom of Lithuania was established in 1251. Between 1772 and 1795, the largest area of Lithuanian territory became part of the Russian Empire.

During World War I, Germany occupied Lithuania in 1915, and the Lithuanian people tried to look for opportunities to restore Lithuania's independence. On February 16, 1918, the Council of Lithuania proclaimed the independent state of Lithuania with Vilnius as the capital.
