Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania is a public holiday in Lithuania, and it is observed on March 11 each year.
Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania commemorates the anniversary of the independence declaration from the Soviet Union on March 11, 1990. It is the first Soviet republic to declare independence from the Soviet Union.
During World War I, Germany occupied Lithuania in 1915, and the Lithuanian people tried to look for opportunities to restore Lithuania's independence. On February 16, 1918, the Council of Lithuania proclaimed the independent state of Lithuania with Vilnius as the capital.
After two decades of independence, Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union during World War II and became one of the soviet socialist republics in 1940. On March 11, 1990, the Supreme Council formally declared the re-establishment of Lithuanian independence.
As the first republic declared independence from the Soviet Union, it inspired other Soviet republics.
