Day of Extremadura is a regional holiday in the autonomous community of Extremadura in Spain, and it is observed on September 8 each year.
Day of Extremadura coincides with the Catholic festivity of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is a statue of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. According to the local legend, the statue was carved by Luke the Evangelist and given to Leander of Seville.
The priests buried the statue in the hills near the Guadalupe River when Moors attacked Extremadura in 712. The Virgin statue appeared to a humble cowboy at the beginning of the 14th century when he was searching a missing animal. The priests rediscovered the hidden statue and built a shrine in the location, which became the great Guadalupe monastery.
On February 26, 1983, the Extremadura region became an autonomous community of Spain.
