Curaçao Day is a public holiday in Curaçao, and it is observed on October 10 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Curaçao became a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010.
Curaçao is an island country in the southern Caribbean Sea. The island became a Spanish colony in 1499. Spanish used it as a bridge to explore and conquer territories in northern South America throughout the 16th century. However, the island became less important with the progress of colonization on the continent.
The Dutch West India Company invaded and occupied the island in 1634, making it a Dutch colony in 1791. The British attacked and captured the island in the early 1800s but returned it to Dutch in 1815 when the Dutch incorporated it into the colony of Curaçao and Dependencies.
Curaçao joined other Dutch colonies in the Caribbean and formed the Netherlands Antilles in 1954; however, due to the differences in the politics, location, and culture among the islands, the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved on October 10, 2010. As a result, Curaçao became a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
