Culture and Traditions Day (Micronesia)

Culture and Traditions Day is a public holiday in the Federated States of Micronesia, observed on March 31 each year. The holiday honors the islands' diversity of culture, ethnicity, and religions.

The Federated States of Micronesia is an island country in Oceania, consisting of four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. Spain claimed the islands in the early 16th century but sold them to Germany in 1899 after the defeat in the Spanish-American War 1898.

Japan acquired the islands during World War I but surrendered them after WWII. As a result, the United Nations created the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) in 1947 with the administration of the United States.

On May 10, 1979, four Trust Territory districts formed the Federated States of Micronesia, and it achieved independence on November 3, 1986.

People with different cultural and ethnolinguistic backgrounds settled here over the centuries. About 49% of the population are Chuukese, 24% are Pohnpeian, 6% are Kosraean, and 5% are Yapese. There are also many different religions on the islands, such as Catholicism, Protestants, Buddhists, etc.
