Constitution Day is a public holiday in Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, and it is observed on May 5 each year. The holiday commemorates when the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan was first adopted in 1993.
Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia. People inhabited the territory for thousands of years. In 1876, the territory became part of the Russian Empire.
After the 1917 Russian Revolution, Soviet power was established in the region. The Soviet Union created the Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast in 1924, which became the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) on December 5, 1936, one constituent republic of the Soviet Union.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Kyrgyzstan declared independence on August 31, 1991. On May 5, 1993, the first constitution was adopted. Since its adoption, the constitution has been amended and changed several times.
