Constitution Day (Kosovo)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Kosovo, observed on April 9. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the new Kosovo constitution formally consented on April 9, 2008.

The Republic of Kosovo is a country in Southeast Europe. It was under different rules in the past centuries. Serbia annexed Kosovo in 1912 after 500 years of rule by the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, Kosovo became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

After World War II, federal Yugoslavia made Kosovo an autonomous province within Serbia. In 1974, Kosovo gained to function at the administrative level, the same as other federal republics, but the privileges were terminated due to the increased ethnic tension in the 1980s.

The Kosovo War started in 1998 and lasted over a year until June 1999 with the intervention of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). On February 17, 2008, Kosovo formally declared its independence from Serbia after the War, although Serbia considered the declaration illegal. Currently, about 100 countries recognized the independence of Kosovo, but many other countries did not yet.

After independence, the Constitution of Kosovo became the supreme law of the Republic of Kosovo. The constitution was signed on April 7, 2008, at the national library in Pristina. It was formally consented to on April 9 and came to effect on June 15, 2008.
