Armed Forces Day is a public holiday in Egypt, and it is observed on October 6 each year.
Armed Forces Day commemorates the anniversary when the Egyptian army successfully crossed the Suez Canal and defeated the Israeli army on October 6, 1973. The war ended with a cease-fire secured by the United States, which strengthened the position of Egypt in the negotiations with Israel.
In 1982, Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt through the peace treaties signed after the War. Israel captured the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt in 1967 in the Six-Day War, fought between Israel and Jordan, Syria, and Egypt.
