Anniversary of the Arengo (San Marino)

The Anniversary of the Arengo is a public holiday in the Republic of San Marino, and it is observed on March 25 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the 1906 San Marino citizenry meeting.

San Marino is a European microstate and a landlocked country surrounded by Italy. It is the smallest republic in the world, with a population of about 33,000. San Marino was established in 301 AD, and the border has remained unchanged since 1463.

The Arengo (Meeting) ruled the country from the fifth century and was the Republic's supreme authority. However, the Princely and Sovereign Council was created to rule the country in the 17th century, and it refused to introduce the co-option of its members.

On March 25, 1906, San Marino held a Meeting in the Parish church for the restoration of democracy with two questions: maintain the oligarchic co-optation and divide the council seats between the city and the countryside.

90% of voters rejected the first proposal, and 95% approved the second. The meeting resulted in the first democratic elections in the country.
