Abolition of Slavery commemorates the anniversary of slavery being abolished in Mauritius on February 1, 1835. In the late 18th century, Mauritius was under French rule, and it was an important slave-trading center. When the British took control of the island in 1810, slaves accounted for about 80% of the island's population, most of the slaves coming from Africa and Madagascar.

Slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1834, and several months later, slavery was also abolished in Mauritius on February 1, 1835. Mauritius was the last of the British colonies to abolish slavery, and it was one of the important events in Mauritius.
