Independence Day (Nicaragua)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Nicaragua, observed on September 15 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when Nicaragua achieved its independence in 1821.

Nicaragua is the largest country in the Central American isthmus. Various indigenous cultures inhabited the territory for thousands of years. Christopher Columbus arrived in Nicaragua in 1502 on his fourth voyage.

The Spaniards returned 20 years later and established the first permanent settlements in 1524. In the next three centuries, Nicaragua remained relatively stable. At the beginning of the 19th century, the French revolution and the independence of American countries sparked the idea of independence in Nicaragua. The citizens of Leon were the first to act against the Spanish monarchy, followed by other cities.

On September 15, 1821, Nicaragua became independent, but it was soon incorporated into the First Mexican empire. In 1823, it became a part of the United Provinces of Central America, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. On November 5, 1838, Nicaragua withdrew from the Federation of Central American States and became an independent public.
