Independence Day (Solomon Islands)

Independence Day is a public holiday in the Solomon Islands on July 7 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Solomon Islands gained its independence on this day in 1978.

The Solomon Islands is an island country located in the Pacific Ocean. People began to inhabit the islands thousands of years ago. The first European contact occurred in 1568, and more people especially whaling vessels, regularly visited the islands for food and water in the 18th century.

In 1886, Germany annexed the northern Solomon Islands, and in 1893, the southern Solomons became the British protectorate. However, in 1900, Germany ceded northern Solomon to Britain. The Solomon Islands sought to prepare the self-governance and independence with the decolonization sweeping after World War II. The Solomon Islands gained full self-government in 1976 and independence on July 7, 1978.
