Constitution Day (Marshall Islands)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, observed on May 1 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Constitution of the Marshall Islands took into force in 1979.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands is an independent island country in the Pacific Ocean. The Spanish explorer landed on the islands in 1526, and Spain formally claimed the islands in 1874.

Spain and Germany reached an agreement, and Germany took control of the islands following the German compensation in 1885. However, Japan assumed control of the Marshall Islands at the beginning of World War I.

Japan surrendered the islands after World War II. As a result, the United Nations created the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) in 1947 and was under the United States administration.

The Constitution of the Marshall Islands was approved on March 1, 1979, in the constitutional referendum, in which 63.8% of the voters favored the Constitution. The Constitution was formally adopted on May 1, 1979, and the Republic of Marshall Islands was established.
