Liberation Day is a public holiday in Libya, and it is observed on October 23 each year. The holiday commemorates the fall of Muammar Gaddafi and his loyalist forces.
Libya is a country in the Maghreb region in North Africa, and people inhabited the region for thousands of years under different rules. Italia occupied Libya and established colonies after the Italo-Turkish War in 1911, combined into the Italian Libya colony in 1934.
Following the defeat of Italy in World War II, the British military controlled the former Italian Libyan provinces of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, and the French controlled the province of Fezzan. On December 24, 1951, Libya declared its independence as the United Kingdom of Libya.
On September 1, 1969, Muammar Gaddafi led a group of military, staged a coup, and took power. In 1977, Libya became the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, and Gaddafi formed a totalitarian regime.
Following the Arab Spring movements in countries in the Middle East and North Africa, Libya started the civil war in February 2011. On October 20, 2011, Gaddafi was killed in the city of Sirte, and the regime ended. October 23 was celebrated as a national holiday in memory of the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.
