Revolution Day is a public holiday in Guatemala, and it is observed on October 20 each year.
Revolution Day commemorates the uprising in 1944 which overthrew Jorge Ubico's presidency. Jorge Ubico was elected as the 21st President of Guatemala and Ubico's rule has been characterized as totalitarian.
Ubico's repressive policies led to people's upset. In 1944, middle-class intellectuals, students, and professionals gathered together to push back against Ubico's rule, and many protestors died. With the help of political and military leaders, protestors were able to peacefully overthrow Ubico's rule on October 20, 1944.
