National Day is a public holiday in Mauritius, observed on March 12 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Mauritius proclaimed independence on March 12, 1968.
In 1959, Harold Macmillan made his famous speech, "Wind of Change Speech," which he acknowledged gave complete independence to its colonies. This paved the independence of colonies in the late fifties.
On March 12, 1968, Mauritius adopted a new constitution and proclaimed independence. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam became the first prime minister, and Queen Elizabeth II remained the head of state.
