Arrival of Indentured Labourers

The arrival of Indentured Labourers is a public holiday in Mauritius, observed on November 2 each year.

The arrival of Indentured Labourers commemorates when the first indentured workers arrived at the island. Mauritius was under French rule, and it was an important slave-trading center. When the British took control of the island in 1810, slaves accounted for about 80% of the island's population, most of the slaves coming from Africa and Madagascar.

Slavery was abolished in Mauritius on February 1, 1835. After the abolition of slavery, Indentured laborers became the system to meet the requirements of the labour needed in farms in the colonial territories.

From 1834 to the early 1930s, about half a million indentured laborers were recruited to Mauritius, mainly from India. The indentured laborers signed a contract for 5 years and were meant to receive wages, but the wages were low.
