Republic Day is a public holiday in Malta, observed on December 13 each year. The holiday celebrates the anniversary of the creation of the Republic of Malta on December 13, 1974. Malta became a British protectorate in 1800 after the Siege of Malta and transformed into a British Crown colony in 1813.
Britain granted Malta self-governance as a result of Malta's brave resistance to the Axis powers following World War II. In 1964, Malta declared independence from the British Empire and became one of the Commonwealth of Nations. Malta retained Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Malta, the head of state.
In 1971, the Malta Labour Party won the elections and declared Malta a republic with the President as the head of state on December 13. The new government negotiated with the British Empire and extended the lease to the end of March 1979 (Freedom Day), when British troops left Malta.
