Independence Day is a public holiday in Malta, observed on September 21 each year.
Independence Day celebrates the anniversary when Malta gaining independence from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1964. Malta became a British protectorate in 1800 after the Siege of Malta and transformed into a British Crown colony in 1813.
Britain granted Malta self-governance as a result of Malta's brave resistance to the Axis powers, which caused the independence movement to grow. In 1964, Malta declared independence from the British Empire and became one of the Commonwealth of Nations. Malta retained Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Malta, the head of state.
