Galician Literature Day is a regional holiday in the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain, and it is observed on May 17 each year. The holiday celebrates the Galician language and its literature. The Galician language is an Indo-European language, mainly spoken in the autonomous community of Galicia, and its neighboring regions.
The celebration of the holiday takes place on May 17 each year, and it was instituted by the Royal Galician Academy in 1963 to commemorate the centenary of Cantares Gallegos, the first work written in the Galician language.
On May 17, 1863, Cantares Gallegos was first published by the Galician poet Rosalía de Castro (1837–1885), who was strongly identified with her native Galicia.
