Balearic National Day is a public holiday in the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain, and it is observed on March 1 each year.
Balearic National Day commemorates the anniversary of the statute of autonomy. It granted autonomous status to the islands and was signed on March 1, 1983. The Balearic Islands are an archipelago of islands in the western Mediterranean Sea.
The Roman Empire conquered the islands in 123 BC and the Vandals conquered the islands in the 5th century AD. The islands were under Moorish rule in the 10th century, and James I of Aragon's armies arrived in 1229. The islands became under Spanish control in 1349, and they passed on to the British Empire in 1738.
For centuries, the Balearic sailors and pirates had been masters of the western Mediterranean, and the islands were frequently attacked by pirates. In 1883, the islands came back to Spain again, and it finally became an autonomous community of Spain in 1983.
