Women's Day is a public holiday in Gabon, and it is observed on April 17 each year. The holiday marks the first female Gabonese politician Rose Francine Rogombe, who was the acting President of Gabon from June 10 to October 16, 2009.
Rose Francine Rogombe was born on September 20, 1942. She worked several positions in the Gabonese public sector, and became the Vice-President of the Special Criminal Court in the 1990s, from which she was nicknamed as the iron lady.
In February 2009, she was elected as the President of the Senate and became the constitutionally designated successor to the Presidency of the Republic in the event of a vacancy according to the constitution. The Constitutional Court designated her as interim President on June 9, 2009, following the death of President Omar Bongo on June 8, 2009.
Ali Bongo won the presidential election and became the third President of Gabon on October 16, 2009. Rogombe returned to her post in the Senate. She died on April 10, 2015.
