Virgin Islands Day (British Virgin Islands)

Virgin Islands Day, previously known as Territory Day, is a public holiday in the British Virgin Islands, and it is observed on July 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the history when the British Virgin Islands was positioned as an independent nation in 1960.

The British Virgin Islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea, which consist of 4 main islands Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and many small islands and cays. The islands were discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his second voyage.

In 1672, the British captured Tortola from the Dutch and got Anegada and Virgin Gorda in 1680. The British introduced sugar cane, which became the main economic support of the islands until the middle of the 19th century.

The territory was administrated together with other regions. In 1960, the islands gained their separate colony status, symbolizing an independent state. However, the territory became autonomous in 1967. In the 1960s, the islands switched their economy to tourism and financial services, and it is one of the richest regions in the Caribbean.
