Victory Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Tajikistan, observed on May 9 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the German Instrument of Surrender was signed. It was a legal document that effected the extinction of Nazi Germany and ended World War II in Europe.
The document was signed on the night of May 8, 1945, at Berlin Time and on May 9, at Moscow Time. For this reason, Tajikistan and other former members of the Soviet Union celebrated Victory Day on May 9, while many other European countries celebrated on May 8.
