National Unity Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Tajikistan on June 27 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the Civil War ended in 1997.
Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. Tajikistan declared independence on September 9, 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, the nation fell into the Civil War in 1992 after independence in 1992.
The Civil War began in May 1992 between the Islamic rebel groups and the Russian and Uzbekistan-backed Tajik governments. Approximately 20,000 to 100,000 people were killed during the war, and over one million became refugees. The war lasted 5 years, and the warring sides signed the peace agreement on June 27, 1997, officially ending the war.
