Victory Day is a public holiday in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is observed on May 9 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the German Instrument of Surrender was officially signed and it was a legal document that affected the extinction of Nazi Germany and ended World War II in Europe.
The document was signed on the night of May 8, 1945 at Berlin Time, which was the morning of May 9 at Moscow Time, and for this reason, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the countries of the Eastern Bloc celebrate Victory Day on May 9, while many other European countries celebrate on May 8.
May 9 had been recognized as Victory Day in Bosnia and Herzegovina since its independence in 1992, but it is a public day only in the autonomous entity of the Republic of Srpska.
