Victory Day is a public holiday in Moldova, observed on May 9 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the German Instrument of Surrender was officially signed. It was a legal document that affected the extinction of Nazi Germany and ended World War II in Europe.
The document was signed on the night of May 8, 1945, at Berlin Time and the morning of May 9, at Moscow Time. For this reason, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the countries of the Eastern Bloc celebrate Victory Day on May 9, while many other European countries celebrate on May 8.
May 9 has been recognized as Victory Day in Moldova since its independence in 1991, although the holiday was also celebrated when Moldova was under the rule of the Soviet Union.
