Tsagaan Sar, also known as the Mongolian Lunar New Year, is the most important festival in Mongolia. It is observed on the first day of the year according to the Mongolian Lunar Calendar.
Tsagaan Sar is the most important time for a family union. During Tsagaan Sar, thousands of people will return to their hometowns to meet family and friends. Most businesses will also close to celebrate the festival. Family members gather at the home of the eldest member, share traditional food, and offer goodwill to each other.
On the first day of Tsagaan Sar, people will wake up early, dress in beautiful clothes, and greet the family's seniors with deep respect. In Mongolia, the holiday normally lasts 3 days.
Like Chinese New Year, the Mongolian Lunar Calendar is named after the twelve animals in a repeating 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
