Thingyan Festival, also known as the water festival, is a public holiday in Myanmar, and it lasts 4 days from April 13 to 16.
Thingyan Festival is the most important festival in Myanmar and marks the start of the new year, the first day of the Myanmar lunar calendar. Thingyan Festival is often called the water festival; people splash one another with buckets of water. Water is believed to wash away people's sins and diseases and bring back good luck.
Following Thingyan Festival is New Year's Day, observed on April 17 yearly. People visit elders on new year's day. They also offer food donations to people and do other meritorious deeds.
