Thanksgiving Day (Grenada)

Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday in Grenada, and it is observed on October 25 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the U.S. and a coalition of Caribbean nations invaded Grenada.

Grenada is an island country in the Caribbean Sea, located at the southern end of the Grenadines island chain. On February 7, 1974, Grenada gained independence from the United Kingdom.

In 1979, the Marxist New Jewel Movement (NJM) headed by Maurice Bishop launched a bloodless coup and established the Marxist–Leninist government. In 1983, Maurice Bishop and the members of the NJM developed the disputes, and he was arrested and executed, which led to the demonstrations and created instability in the country.

On October 25, 1983, the United States combined forces invaded Grenada with the code name of Operation Urgent Fury. The forces defeated Grenadian resistance and occupied Grenada in a few days. Although the invasion freed political prisoners and restored the former government and stability, the invasion was criticized by many countries because it was considered a violation of international law.
