Statehood Day is a public holiday in Montenegro, observed on July 13. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Montenegro becoming an independent state in the Congress of Berlin in 1878.
Montenegro is a country in Southeastern Europe that has been under different rules for centuries. In 1496, the Ottoman Empire occupied Montenegro. However, Montenegro was unsatisfied with the Ottoman Empire's rule, raising numerous rebellions.
In 1858, the Principality of Montenegro made a decisive victory over the Ottoman Empire in the Battle of Grahovac. The victory forced the Ottoman Empire to demarcate the borders between Montenegro and Ottoman. That was a sign recognizing the independence of Montenegro.
In 1876, the Montenegrin forces defeated the Ottomans in the Battle of Vučji Do. The next year, the Eastern Orthodox coalition led by Russia in the Russo-Turkish War defeated the Ottoman Empire again.
The Congress of Berlin was from June 13 to July 13, 1878, following the Russo-Turkish War. Montenegro was recognized as one independent state in the conference.
