Sonnam Lochhar

Sonnam Lochhar, also known as Sonam Lhosar, is a regional festival in the state of Sikkim, India, and it is observed on the first day of new moon in the month of Magh, which usually falls in the month of January and February.

Sonnam Lochhar marks the beginning of the Tibetan New Year. Dance is one of the major celebrations of the festival. People wear colourful and traditional attires and dance following the rhythmic beats of damphu, which is a traditional drum. It is believed that dancing with Damphu can get rid of all the negative energies and evil spirits.
