Second Republic Day is a public holiday in Guinea, and it is observed on April 3 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the bloodless coup in 1984, in which Guinea overthrew dictator Ahmed Toure in 1984.
Guinea is a coastal country in West Africa. The European traders arrived in the 16th century, and Guinea became part of French West Africa in the 1890s. In 1958, Guinea declared its independence from France.
Ahmed Toure became the first President of Guinea. After France pulled out of Guinea, it quickly aligned itself with the Soviet Union and adopted socialist policies. Ahmed Toure soon became a dictator. He declared the Democratic Party of Guinea-African Democratic Rally (PDG) the only legal political party in the country in 1960 and put thousands of opponents with different opinions into jails.
Ahmed Toure died on March 26, 1984. On April 3, 1984, Colonels Lansana Conte and Diarra Traore staged a bloodless coup and seized the power. Lansana Conte became the new president and Diarra Traore served as the prime minister. The new government released political prisoners and encouraged refugees to return from exile.
The overthrow of the rule of Ahmed Toure on April 3, 1984, marks the start of the Second Republic of Guinea.
