Republic Day (San Marino)

Republic Day is a public holiday in the Republic of San Marino, observed on September 3 each year. The holiday celebrates the anniversary when the republic of San Marino being founded in 301 AD.

San Marino is a European microstate and a landlocked country surrounded by Italy, and it is the smallest republic in the world, with a population of about 33,000.

According to the legend, San Marino was founded by a Christian stonemason Saint Marinus in 301 AD. He escaped from the Dalmatian island of Rab (in current Croatia) in 287 AD when Emperor Diocletian, a Roman emperor from 284 to 305, decided to reconstruct the city walls of Rimini.

He settled in the nearby Monte Titano and built a small church there. The Republic of San Marino was formed around the church gradually over the years. Although there is no existing evidence, the official founding date of San Marino is September 3, 301 AD.
