Saint Helena's Day

Saint Helena's Day is a public holiday in Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha, and it is observed on May 21 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Saint Helena island's founding over 500 years ago.

Although there are different opinions, most historians believe Saint Helena was first found by navigator João da Nova on May 21, 1502, when he traveled back from India.

João da Nova was a navigator and explorer at the service of Portugal in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. He was born in 1460 in the Kingdom of Galicia, Spain, and died in 1509 in India. In 1501, he left Portugal for India with a fleet of four ships and found Ascension Island. On his return to Portugal, he found St. Helena on May 21, 1502.

Saint Helena's Day has been celebrated in Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha since 1945, and it is a day full of joy. People celebrate the holiday with many activities such as sports and dress competitions, parades, fireworks in the evening, and many other events.
