Royal Ploughing Ceremony

Royal Ploughing Ceremony, also known as the Ploughing Festival, is a public holiday in Thailand, and it is observed at the beginning of the rainy season, usually in May.

Royal Ploughing Ceremony marks the traditional start of the rice-growing season. In Thailand, the ceremony is usually presided by the King and the Queen and takes place at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

During the ceremony, two sacred oxen lough a furrow in the ceremonial ground, and the rice seed is sown. After the plowing, the oxen are offered plates of food, including rice, corn, green beans, sesame, grass, water, and rice whisky. Court astrologers and Brahmins will predict on the coming growing season based on what the oxen eat.
