Royal Brunei Armed Forces Day is a public holiday in Brunei, and it is observed on May 31 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Royal Brunei Armed Forces were formed in 1961.
Brunei is a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. During the 15th century, the Bruneian Empire became an important power and controlled a large portion of the island of Borneo. Due to the civil war and the arrival of the western powers, the Bruneian Empire started to decline in the 17th century.
By 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate after signing the Treaty of Protection with the British Empire. During World War II, Brunei was occupied by the Japanese until 1945, when Brunei was liberated by the Australian forces.
In 1959, Brunei became a self-governing state under the new constitution although its foreign affairs and defense remained the responsibility of the United Kingdom. The Brunei Malay Regiment was formed on May 31, 1961. After Brunei gained independence from the British on January 1, 1984, the Brunei Malay Regiment was renamed as the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
